LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE

By Maulana Dr. Waffie Mohammed

Muslims are the best people from among the human beings because they recognize that only Allah is the Lord and Master of the entire creation. Nothing can be compared with Him as no creature can ever be like the Creator.

Muslims have hope in benefitting from the Lord’s compassion and mercy because they strive to please Him by doing what He has commanded them to do; and avoiding what He has prohibited.

Muslims know that by so doing they have hopes of meeting their Lord on the Day of Judgment. This is because He tells us in the Holy Qur’an the following:

Whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and, in the worship of his Lord, admit no one as partner. (18:110)

To make every effort to please the Lord will bring great rewards for all those who go along that Path. One benefit for so doing will result in the opportunity of “holding the Hand of Allah”; and going into Paradise.

Allah says:

Whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy Hand Hold that never breaks. (2:256)

Prophet Muhammad (pboh), our Leader who is also the Universal Model was able to connect directly to the Lord on the night of the Miraj. He achieved this blessing while he was still in this world, because he was free from all sins. (sins form barriers between a person and the Lord.)

If we should follow him, we may not be able to do so in this life, but will experience Allah’s closeness to us, after Judgment, when we would be forgiven for our sins.
As opposed to the aspiration of holding the hand of Allah, there are those who follow the ways of Satan. About them Allah says:

Of those who reject Faith, their patrons are the Taghut (evil) ones. From light they will lead them on to the dept of darkness. They will be the companions of the Fire to dwell therein forever. (2:257)

A Muslim should make every effort not associate with evil, and must not be the friends of those who do so. Allah says:

When you see men engaged in vain discourse about Our Signs, turn away from them, unless they change the subject. If Satan should cause you to forget, then, after recollection, do not sit in the company of those who do wrong. (6:68)

In conclusion we are to be to be reminded that good removes evil, and good and evil are not equal. As a result the both of them cannot mix, and we cannot compromise by harboring both of them in our hearts at one and the same time. Perhaps this is a reason why Allah says:

Allah has not made for any man two hearts in one body. (33:4)

This means that you cannot accommodate good and evil at one and the same time.

Every believer should try to get as close to the Prophet (pboh) as possible if he or she has desires of getting close to Allah.

CLEANLINESS IN ISLAM

In the name of Allah the Beneficent

CLEANLINESS IN ISLAM
By Maulana Dr. Waffie Mohammed

The Merciful Lord Who is high above His entire creation has allocated for Himself Divine Attributes which are to be the terms of reference for man who is required to represent Him here on the earth. He says in His Holy Words, i.e. in the Holy Qur’an the following:

The Nature of Allah (i.e. His Sunnah) is the nature He has bestowed on mankind. The Habit of Allah does not change. (30:30)

It is without doubt a great blessing for man, a finite creature, to be selected by the All-Knowing, Infinite Being to be able to manifest something the “Habits of God”, contained in His Divine Personality, in one’s earthly life.

Every Attribute is equally important and has its benefits. Perhaps this is a reason why Alllah made them known to us. He says:

To Allah belong the Beautiful Names: (7:180)

Islam teaches that man should make every effort to mould his personality in accordance with the qualities contained in the Divine Attributes, so that he will become a better person physically, morally and spiritually.

In order to maximize the effect between creature and the Creator, one has to be pure and clean, as impurities will prevent proper contact between the light of the Lord and the soul. Allah says:

Verily, Allah loves those who make repentance and those who purify themselves.(2:222)

Impurities are of different kinds and affect the personality in different ways. The basic is physical impurity. It soils the physical body and must be removed. In order to be able to get maximize benefit from worship, reading of the Holy Qur’an, etc. one has to be in a state of physical purity. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why the Prophet (pboh) is reported to have said:

Cleanliness is half of faith.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness.

On the Day of Judgment the human being will be required to stand in front of the Lord with body and soul. If the body was not kept clean, there will be a problem, as the Lord loves cleanliness.

In addition, the action of the physical body through the nafs, can impact upon the soul. It can either keep it bright and shining or the soul can be soiled. As indulgence in prohibited things will put stains on it. Allah says:

Nay, but they have placed stains on their hearts because of what they do. (83:14)
Those who are believers, and do not clothe their faith with wrong doing they are the successful ones. (6:82)

When the light of the soul b become soiled it can spread to the cells of the body. This will cause the body to remain dark, and upon resurrection will have no light in it. Allah says:

On that Day, some faces will be bright and some faces will be dark. (3:106)

As Allah gave guidance in the Book and in the life pattern of the Beloved Messenger, we must endeavor to keep our selves pure and clean if we are desirous benefitting from what the Lord has prepared for those who took the necessary care to keep themselves pure and clean.

THE SEAL OF THE PROPHETS

Upon the entry of Father Adam and his wife Eve on the earth there was the need for guidance. In the Garden of Eden Adam was guided as to what he can do, which was beneficial and what was to be avoided, as such would be detrimental to them.

Even then Satan deceived them and caused their fall. Here on earth they were to pro-create and be the father of the human species, which was designated to be the representative of Allah all over the earth. Allah says:

O mankind; reverence your Guardian Lord Who created you from a single person, and created from it (that person) its mate; and from both of them scattered many men and women. (4:1)

In his new environment, man was required to know the ways of taking care of himself, how he should relate with his fellow human being, how he should utilize the things of nature and how he should connect and represent his Lord here on the earth.

In addition to the need for guidance, he was informed that he should be on guard against the schemes and tricks of Satan who made a vow in the presence of his Lord that he was going to fight Adam and his progeny. This is recorded in the Qur’an as follows:

(Satan said), Because You have thrown me out of the way, verily, I will lie in wait for them on the Straight Path. Then, I shall assault them from before them, and behind them; from their right and from their left; and You will not find, in most of them, gratitude; (for Your mercies). (7:16-17)

One way of catching the progeny of Adam is to decorate the evil and make it look attractive. Allah informs us about this trick in the following verse of Al-Qur’an. He says:

Remember, Satan made their sinful acts seem alluring to them, and said; no one among men can overcome you today; while I am with you. (8:48)

Allah, out of His Mercies and Love for man, sent Messengers to every tribe and nation, wherever these were located in the earth, to teach man how to submit to his Creator and be aware of the deceit of Satan whose mission is to divert the focus of everyone from staying on the Straight Path.

Allah communicated with the Messengers in different ways. Some He inspired; some He gave dreams; some He spoke to; some got revelations through the angel; some got revealed Books. In addition to all the ways of communicating with the Messengers, Allah also invited Prophet Muhammad (pboh) to His Divine Presence and had audience with Him.

As mankind continue to grow in wisdom, knowledge and understanding, Allah sent the Final Messenger, Muhammad (pboh) to be the unifying figure for every tribe and nation on the earth, to teach the people how to live as one big human family as brethren in faith; to pray and practice religion in a similar way in every place and age.

Allah bestowed on Prophet Muhammad (pboh) many different types of responsibilities. Some of them were:

  1. He was to be the Messenger for the whole of mankind. This is recorded in the Holy Qur’an in the following verse.  Say (O Muhammad), O men! Verily I am sent unto you all as the Messenger of Allah, to Whom belongeth the dominion of the skies and the earth. (7:158)
  2. He is the universal model. Allah says: We have not sent you (O Muhammad) but as a universal model to mankind; giving them glad tidings, and warning them (against sin). (34:28)
  3. He invited the people to Allah. In this connection Allah tells us the following: As one who invites to Allah by His leave. (33:46)
  4. He lights up the way. Allah says: And the Lamp that gives light. (33:46)
  5. He gave to mankind by the leave of the Lord, the unadulterated Words. Allah says: He (the Pagan) may hear the Word of Allah. (9:6)
  6. He gave to mankind a complete Code of Life. Allah says: This day have I perfected for you your Religion, and completed My Favors upon you. (5:3)
  7. He corrected all errors in beliefs and practices of the followers of the Messengers who came before him. Allah says: The same religion has He established for you; as that which He enjoined on Noah; that which We have sent by inspiration to thee, and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus. (42:13)
  8. He is the “perfect model”. Allah says: You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah, a beautiful pattern of conduct, for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day; and who engages much in the Remembrance of Allah. (33:21)
  9. He informed his followers, on the basis of firsthand knowledge about reward and punishment.  Allah says: Man can have nothing except for what he strives; that his striving will soon come in sight; then will he be rewarded with a complete reward; and that the Lord is the Final Goal. (53:39-42)
  10. He is the Chief Intercessor. Allah says: And those on whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession. Only he who bears witness to the Truth (will intercede) and they know him. (43:86)
  11. He taught the way of getting Allah’s love. Allah says: Say: If you do love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. (3:31)
  12. He is the Straight Path. Allah says: Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. Nor does he say anything of his own desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him. He was taught by one Mighty in Power.(53:2-5)
  13. He continues to be connected to every believer. Allah says: All who obey Allah and the Messenger are in the Company of those on whom is the Grace of Allah; of the Prophets, the Sincere; the Witnesses; and the Righteous. Ah! What a beautiful fellowship. ($;69)
  14. He will be the one who will visit in the graves all who die; and will be a source of light in the graves of the believers. Allah says:  (He is) the Lamp that gives light. (33:46)
  15. Through him the believers are blessed with the gift of His unadulterated Words, i.e. the Holy Qur’an. Allah says: We have without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it from corruption. (15:9)
  16. His Sunnah has been preserved so that believers learn from it the ways of practicing the Deen properly. Allah says: Take what the Messenger gives to you, and stay away from what he denies you. (59:7)

Because the Nobel Messenger gave to the world all that is required to perfect themselves as the Viceroys of the Lord on earth, there was no need for any Messenger to come after him. His mission is available both as the Complete Code of Guidance in the Qur’an and in his Traditions.

INTERCESSION OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PB0H)

In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful

INTERCESSION OF
PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PB0H)

What is Intercession?

Intercession is the art of intervention by one person on behalf of another. It can be done by direct pleading or through prayer, in the case of religion. In this life the living can intercede on behalf of the dead, mainly by begging for the sins that the particular person would have committed during his/her life on earth. It can also include the request to help the person achieve a better life either in this world or in the life that is to come.

The word “intercession” has its roots in the Latin word intercede which can be translated as “to come between. It can mean to make a request on behalf of others.

Intercession really comes from the heart of a person concerning the affairs of another; and is based on the principle of sympathy from one to the other. It can also be as a result of love, the desire to know that difficulties are removed from the one for whom intercession is made.

Intercession can be in the form of a plea on behalf of one who is guilty of wrong doing and is liable for punishment. It can take the forms of prayer for guidance, forgiveness to the Lord in this life and also for those who are already departed.

In the Hereafter, intercession will be permitted by the Merciful Lord from certain people on behalf of others. The Chief Intercessor on that Day will be Prophet Muhammad (pboh).

Who will be able to intercede?

Intercession can only be possible if the one desirous of doing so is acceptable by the one to whom it is made. For example, here in this life, if a person is desirous of making a plea on behalf of another, that person must have a good disposition in the eyes of the other before there will be any inclination for mediation or intercession.

On that Great Day when the Lord will manifest himself as the Master, He will not entertain the plea of any creature on behalf of others, especially those creatures that were worshipped as gods besides Allah.

Allah tells us about this in the following verse of the Holy Qur’an:

On that Day no intercession shall avail except for those for whom permission has been granted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and whose word is acceptable to Him. (20:109).

All the creatures that were worshipped as gods besides Allah in this life will have no powers of intercession for their worshippers on that Day. In this connection Allah says:

What do they take for intercessors other besides Allah? Say, even if they have no power whatsoever and no intelligence? Say: to Allah belongs exclusively (the right to grant) intercession. To Him belongs the domination of the skies and the earth; in the end, it is to Him you shall be brought back. (89:41-42)

On that Day Allah may allow intercession to be made in behalf of some people by others. For example, Allah may allow some angels to dos for some human beings. He says:

And how many angels from the skies who intercession will avail them nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he (the angel) is acceptable to Him. (53:26)

Idols and Jinns , etc. that were worshipped by people of many faiths will have no power to intercede for their worshippers on that Day. Allah says:
And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession. (43:86)

The Chief Intercessor:

According to Traditions, only the Prophet (pboh) will be the Chief Intercessor on the Day of Judgment. On that Day, those who will be in distress will gladly accept any pleading on their behalf because of the distressful situation in which they would have found themselves. About it Prophet Muhammad (pboh) is reported to have said:

How will you be when Allah gathers you together like arrows in a quiver for fifty thousand years and Allah will not look at yo

THE UNIVERSAL MODEL

The Creator in His Wisdom made man His Vicegerent here on the earth.. The implication of this mission entails cultivating the personality both physically and spiritually to produce a unique relationship with man’s connection to his fellow human beings both physically and spiritually, to the environment, (nature) and to the Lord Himself.

A Challenger (Satan) was also permitted to test the sincerity of man in the process of his representation of the Lord here on the earth, and to cause him to become forgetful of the purpose for which he was sent.

The Lord, out of compassion and mercy, sent Messengers to help the people stay on the correct path by helping them to make the right choices during their daily activities.

Each Messenger was specially appointed by the Lord. Every one of them delivered the Message to the people to whom they were sent, and no matter what were the challenges to which they were exposed, they never put their personal feelings or interest in their Mission. Allah tells us about it in the following verse of the Holy Qur’an:

No Messenger ever deceived mankind. (3:161)

As each Messenger was sent to a specific tribe or nation, it is possible that there were many Messengers in the world in different parts at the same time. Even just before the coming of Prophet Muhammad (pboh) there were two Messengers, John and Jesus among the Israelites at the same time.

Arab Messengers:

Up to the time of the coming of the Prophet Muhammad (pboh) the Arabs never had a Messenger. Makkah became populated when Hazrat Ishmael and his mother Hajrah (Hagar) were put there by Abraham, upon divine inspiration.

For reasons only known to the Lord, preference was given by Him to the progeny of Isaac, that is, the Israelites to establish the religion of Allah on the earth. So, from Jacob to Jesus, there were many messengers who came and invite the people to the way of the Lord.  In contrast to this, Prophet Muhammad (pboh) was the only Messenger who was sent to the Arab people.

Before Prophet Jesus left the world he told the people that when he would leave the Promised Messenger would be coming. He said:

I have many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now. How be it when he, the Spirit of Truth is come; he will guide you unto all truth, for he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear; that shall he speak and he will show you the things to come. (Jn.16:12-19)

The Qur’an also supports the fact that Jesus told his people about the coming of Prophet Muhammad (pboh). This is recorded in following verse:

And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: O Children of Israel, I am the Messenger of Allah sent to you confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving Glad Tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad. (61:4)

The Arabs were a people that were not influenced by any “ism”, that were prevalent at the time. Perhaps, this was one of the reasons why they were called “ummiyoon” which could mean not influenced by any civilization or culture. So in addition to being unlettered they were also  not influenced by any one. Allah says:

And there are among the people unlettered, who know nothing of the Book. They (speak only from) their desires; and they do nothing but make conjectures. (2:78)

And you (O Muhammad) were not able to recite a book before (this Book) came; nor were you able to transcribe it. (29:48)

As the Arabs grew as a nation all by themselves, and they were not connected to any of the known civilizations, Prophet Muhammad (pboh), who was from among the progeny of Ishmael, grew up not being influenced by any one. Allah tells us about this in the following verse. He says:

He (Allah) it is Who caused to be raised amongst the unlettered people a Prophet from amongst themselves; to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and to instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom. (62:2)

Had there been any Messenger or Teacher before the Prophet (pboh), then, he could have been accused of copying.  But, he being the first amongst the Arabs to be a believer in Allah and the Last Day, the verse which says about him that he was the first Muslim, can be applicable in this case, as before him there were no believer amongst the Arabs.

The Prophet (pboh) was special:

Prophet Muhammad (pboh) was, and will be outstanding personality in the entire creation. Some of the reasons for being unique are:

  •    .    He is the first in creation to be a believer.

  •   The first amongst the Arabs to believe in Allah and the Last Day.
  •   .     The first Messenger to receive the unadulterated Word of Allah directly from Him in the form of a complete Book.
  •   .     The only one to be recognized as the best example for anyone to follow.
  •   .     The only one to be a Universal model for mankind.
  •   .  The only one who gave to the world a universal message that is the source of guidance for all times and places.
  •   .  The only Messenger who was able to inform his followers about the beginning and end of the universe and all creation.
  •  .        The only Messenger to teach that forgiveness is better than to take revenge
  •           The only Messenger who was able to unite mankind into a universal brotherhood.
  •             The only one who is qualified to intercede on behalf of all believers on the Day of Judgment.
  •       The only one to perfect the mission which started with Father Abraham.

The Message:

Prophet Muhammad (pboh) gave to mankind theoretically and practically all that is required to function as a true representative of Allah here on the earth.

The complete Code of life is contained in the Holy Qur’an which Allah says is:

And We sent down the Book to thee for the express purpose, that you should make clear to them those things in which they differ; and that it should be a guide and a mercy to those who believe. (16:64)

In addition to being a Book of Guidance, the Qur’an enlightens the believers about the mission of the Messengers who came before him, what were their difficulties and how their people deviated after receiving the guidance. Perhaps, this is a reason why Allah says that it is Al Furqan; meaning the Criterion.

The highlight of the Message that the Prophet (pboh) made known is the basic principle of faith which is: “No creature can ever be like the Creature”.

Everyone who desires to become a Muslim must declare belief that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger.

Islam recognizes that each messenger brought the same Message, of belief in Allah and the Last Day. As a result, the Qur’an informs us that anyone who upholds such a belief, even if he is a Jew, Christian, or connected to any other messenger, he will have hopes of attaining Paradise. Allah says:

Those who believe (in the Qur’an); those who are Jews; and the Sabians and the Christians: any who believe in Allah and the Last Day; and work righteousness; on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve. (5:69)

Prophet Muhammad (pboh) emphasized the importance of willing submission to Allah and demonstrated in his life how this is possible. Allah tells us about his ways of life in the following verses:

Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. Nor does he say anything of his own desire. (53:2-3)

TOO LATE TOO LATE

A lot of hopes and aspirations,
As he journeyed through life.
He gave much material considerations,
His family he sacrificed.

As time passed by each day,
He kept busy with his chores.
Many times he did not pray,
Always active behind doors.

One day to his surprise,
He felt dizzy and fell.
He was hearing loud cries,
As no one could have tell.

Everything changed suddenly,
As he stood there helplessly,
He is now exposed to reality,
And knows that this life is temporary.

Unable to change the situation,
He now began to repent,
He is in a bad situation,
As he thought of what he sent.

He became very frightened,
As the angel came to him.
His load could not be lightened,
His future looks very grim.

Too late too late is now his cry,
As he looked both front and back,
He let his chances passed by,
He has an empty sack.

BE A STRONG LINK

Every human being is a link in the human chain which began with the coming of Adam and Eve on the earth. As a link in this important chain, man is required to keep two things in mind, one is regarding what he is sending before him and the other is what he is leaving behind. In this connection Allah says:

Let every person look at what he has sent for the morrow. (59:14)

One way of developing a strong link in the chain is to leave behind things that will continue to benefit us even though we are no longer physically alive in this world. We can achieve this by leaving those of our relatives and friends who pray for our forgiveness and well-being in Barzakh and in the Hereafter.

Allah taught the believers to pray as follows:

O our Lord, cover (us) with Thy forgiveness; me, my parents, and all Believers. (14:41)

Our Lord, forgive us, and our brethren who came before us in faith. (59:10)

We must also be careful regarding our deeds and actions; as it is only the good that will reach the Lord Who is the most High. In this connection Allah informs us as follows:

And whatever good you send forth for your own nafs, you shall find it in Allah’s presence of Allah. (74:20)

It is a known fact that evil cannot ascend, as Allah has placed a barrier below the first sky to protect whatever is above the lower sky from evil. He says:

And verily, We have adorned the lowest sky with lamps (stars), and We have made them missiles to drive away the Evil Ones. (67:5)

Allah has confirmed that the deeds of man are stored in two places; good up in the sky while evil is stored in a dungeon. He says:

Verily, the record of the wicked will be kept in Sijjin (a dungeon), (83:7)

Verily, the record of the righteous will be kept in illiyeen. (high place. (83:18)

It is because evil will be stored in the material world that it will be destroyed when the earth will no longer exist in its present form.

In addition to a person’s personal deeds, each one of us is required to leave behind things that will benefit others, e.g. knowledge, beneficial facilities, trained Islamic workers, etc. Every time a person should benefit from what is left behind by one who has gone before, that person will continue to benefit for what is done.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"The good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are: knowledge which he learned and then spread; a righteous son whom he leaves behind; a copy of the Qur'an that he leaves as a legacy; a mosque that he built; a house that he built for wayfarers; a canal that he dug; or charity that he gave during his lifetime when he was in good health. These deeds will reach him after his death." (Ibn Majah — authenticated by Al-Albani)

As it is only one life we have to live, and our life span is fixed, let us make the best use of it, as the Hereafter is Eternal, and this short life span of ours can earn for us everlasting Bliss if properly managed.
